Sony is revealing today that its PlayStation 4 sales have surpassed 40 million units. That's 5 million more than the 35 million milestone Sony last revealed publicly less than six months ago. It's clear that Sony is still way ahead of Microsoft's Xbox One sales, placing it firmly at the top of the current games console market. Microsoft hasn't been sharing Xbox One sales recently, but EA estimates revealed Microsoft's console sales were around 19 million back in January.
All eyes are now on Sony and Microsoft heading into E3 next month. Both companies are expected to unveil new console hardware at their press events in June. Rumors suggest Microsoft will opt for a slim version of its Xbox One console, while Sony is expected to launch a PS4 "Neo" with better graphics and smoother gameplay. The Verge will be covering both Microsoft and Sony's press events live from E3 next month.
