Spotify announced that it is buying a pair of companies today - one of which seems to be a fit obvious, and one that is a little less simple. The first acquisition is Soundwave, a social music application that creates profiles for its users by tracking what they listen on different streaming services including Spotify. Users can follow each other, chat, swap music, and see what's trending -. Features that all fit well with the existing product Spotify
The acquisition is a little trickier to analyze is Cord Project, a company started by two former Googlers that focuses on voice mail. The company's flagship product is Cord, a mobile application that allows users to send short snippets of audio to individuals or groups. It has an easy to use the simple interface (you see circular portraits of all your contacts and simply press the button to send them a message), and when we tried in 2014 we were very impressed. The company also has several other products, including a voicemail application called Shhout even simpler! and an audio plugin for Twitter.
Spotify does not say much about its plans for either company, but it is possible that acquisitions are as much on talent as buying specific products or features. Spotify exec Shiva Rajaraman suggested as much in a press release welcoming the news to give the music streaming service "the possibility of bringing two extremely talented teams and like-minded in the Spotify family."
In the same press release, Spotify said that buying the Soundwave project Cord and adjust the company 'strategy of building a great experience for music fans. "The project cord staff will remain in their current base in new York to form the core of a new "product group that will focus on creating compelling content experiences." Although the acquisition of Soundwave will simply "Spotify help to improve the overall consumer experience on Spotify."
